Course Description: Aeschylus’ Agamemnon is the first play in the Oresteia, the great surviving Greek trilogy. The trilogy covers the final part of the saga of the House of Atreus, from the return of Agamemnon from Troy to the defense of Orestes and resolution of the curse. The Agamemnon tells of the return of Agamemnon with Cassandra and Clytemnestra’s murderous plot to kill him in revenge for his sacrifice of their daughter, Iphigenia. In this session we will read roughly the first half of the play.
