Course Description: In 17 BC Horace was commissioned to write the Carmen Saeculare, performed at the Ludi Saeculares marking the beginning of a new age. This may have prompted him to return to lyric poetry; more than a decade after he had published his first three books of Odes as a collection, he published a fourth book of Odes, in which we see an older, more reflective Horace nearing the end of his life and career.
