Course Description: This course teaches students how to “read” Byzantine art by combining close visual analysis with short passages and key terms in Greek and Latin. We will examine icons, mosaics, manuscripts, church decoration, inscriptions, and liturgical objects, asking how images communicated theology, authority, devotion, and presence.

Level: No prior knowledge of Byzantine art is required. Some familiarity with Greek or Latin will be helpful but not necessary. The course is designed for students interested in art history, theology, classical reception, and the afterlife of Greek in Christian visual culture.
