Course Description: Perhaps the greatest historian of Medieval Scandinavia, Saxo Grammaticus deals with mythical and semi-mythical kings of Denmark and wider Scandinavia, contextualising stories better known from the accounts of sagas and eddic material within a 'scholarly' historical framework. This course will appeal to those interested in Scandinavian history, the material contained in the vernacular literature of Iceland, as well as lovers of Hamlet: the Gesta Dacorum provides the core material for the story Shakespeare later retells in this key work of English literature and will form a key part of our reading.
