ΥΠΕΡΩΚΕΑΝΕΙΟΣ ΠΛΟΥΣ
Ἤ ΠΛΟΥΣ ΥΠΕΡΩΚΕΑΝΕΙΟΥ
Εἰς μνήμην τοῦ Κ.Π. Καβάφη
ποὺ πῆγε πέρσι γιὰ πάντα στὴν Ἰθάκη
Ἀπὸ σταβέντο φάνηκε τ᾽ ὡραῖο νησὶ
Μὰ τὸ βαπόρι μας δὲν πόντισε. Θὰ πᾶμε
Πολὺ μακρύτερα. Γι᾽ αὐτὸ μιᾶ νάρκη
Χαρακτηρίζει τὴν ὤρα αὐτὴ.
Κι ὅταν ἐξαντληθοῦνε τὰ βιβλία
Καὶ μάθουμε τοὺς χάρτες τῆς πορείας·
Ὅταν ἐξαντληθοῦν οἱ ψίθυροι καὶ τὸ φεγγάρι
Καὶ φτάσουμε στὸν τόπο τῆς προσέγγισης
Θὰ κατεβοῦμε νὰ χαροῦμε τὸ λιμάνι
Θὰ κατεβοῦμε ν᾽ ἀγοράσουμε gold flakes
"Καὶ ἡδονικὰ μυρωδικὰ κάθε λογῆς"
Διὰ τὴν συνέχεια τοῦ πηγαιμοῦ μας.
Κ᾽ἐλπίζω νά ᾽ναι τὸ ταξείδι μακρυνὸ
"Γεμάτο περιπέτειες, γεμάτο γνώσεις"
"Τώρα ποὺ μάθαμε καὶ μεῖς οἱ Νέες ᾽Υόρκες τί σημαίνουν".

SAILING OVER THE OCEANS
OR THE OCEAN LINER'S SAILING
In memory of C.P. Cavafy
Who last year went to Ithaka for ever
Tilting leeward the beautiful island was visible
But our ferry did not sink. We shall move
Much further ahead. This is why a certain narcosis
characterizes this time of day.
And when we have exhausted the books
And when we have already learned the maps of our route;
And when the whispers and the moon have worn out
And we reach the place of approach / coming together
We shall disembark and enjoy the harbour
We shall disembark and buy them golden flakes
and "sensual perfumes of every kind"
For the rest of our setting out (for Ithaka).
And I Hope the voyage is a long one.
"full of adventures, full of discoveries."
"Now that we have understood, too, what these New Yorks mean".
