Course Description: The Germania is a fascinating ethnographic and historical account of the various tribal groups—known collectively to the Romans as the 'Germani'—that lived east of the Rhine, beyond the limits of the Roman Empire.
Surviving antiquity in a single manuscript, Tacitus' depiction of the blue-eyed, fair-haired, pure, unlettered, and indomitable Germanic warrior has exerted profound influence on the intellectual landscape of Europe for the past five-hundred years, especially among the German-speaking peoples; humanists, Romanticists, nationalists, and racists of all stripes have found inspiration, good and bad, from Tacitus.
We will read the Germania in its entirety; time permitting, we may also read Tacitus' smaller treatment on the Britanni from the Agricola and Julius Caesar's earlier essays on the Germani and Gauls from the the Gallic War.
