Course Description: The one with the bees!
Vergil's fourth Georgic is a beautiful encomium of the honeybee, an animal whose industry, social behavior, and delicious honey fascinated the ancients, and indeed still fascinate us today! When Vergil isn't explaining to us aspiring beekeepers where exactly to place our hives or just how to care for a bee under the weather, he describes great battles of the swarms (trumpets and all!) or palaces of honeycomb bustling with servants. The fourth Georgic is especially renowned for its closing section: an epyllion, or 'little epic,' featuring the bee-keeping god Aristaeus and his role in the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice.
DETAILS
Level: Intermediate-Advanced. This course is for students that have a good command of Latin grammar and experience reading continuous texts. Prior experience with Vergil will be helpful. Beekeepers of any background are especially encouraged to enroll!
